The image above, Folio 5 from Louis Renard’s Poissons, écrevisses et crabs shows nine types of fish presented in a detailed hand-colored engraving, and was rendered from drawings, rather than actual specimens. Mai Reitmeyer, research services librarian in the AMNH Research Library, who discusses this work in an essay in Natural Histories, notes that the common names of these specimens come from a mixture of several languages including Dutch and Malay.
