This image showing a lithograph from Daniel Giraud Elliot’s A monograph of the Paradiseidae appears in Elliot’s Jewels: Birds in Paradise in Natural Histories, by Joel L. Cracraft, the Lamont Curator of Birds in the Ornithology Department in the Division of Vertebrate Zoology at the American Museum of Natural History. Cracraft writes that this species, Semioptera wallacii, was discovered by Alfred Russell Wallace, “… the same year that he wrote his revolutionary paper on natural selection.”
