Nature's Fury

This exhibit highlights some of the photographs and artwork held by the Library's Special Collections that document and illustrate the occurrence and aftermath of natural forces.  This online exhibit coincides with Nature’s FuryThe Science of Natural Disasters, an AMNH exhibition - on view from November 15, 2014 through August 9, 2015 - which will help visitors discover the processes behind natural phenomena and discover the science of studying them.  This Digital Special Collections exhibit shows selected historic images and art of earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, and hurricanes from around the world.

The image to the right, from the Museum Library's Lantern Slide Collection, shows people standing before a large tornado in 1898. The black and white image on glass, possibly attributed to photographer N. Losey, captures this seemingly impossible moment in history in an eerie beauty.
