Sharks and Rays
Dr. Stiassny writes that Johannes Müller (1801-1858) and Friedrich Gustav Jakob Henle (1809-1885) together published Systematische Beschreibung der Plagiostomen in 1841, which included anatomical descriptions of 214 species of sharks and rays known at that time. Many of their classifications are still recognized today. An example from the mongraph is this shortfin mako, above, which is recognized as one of the fastest animals in the ocean; one having been recorded traveling an average of 36 miles in a day.
