A Sioux Village......Sioux
George Catlin (1796-1872), painter of the American Indian, was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Self-trained, he traveled extensively through North and South America, visiting tribes and painting well over a thousand pictures. The subject depicted here is from the American Museum of Natural History's outstanding collection of Catlin paintings. His work is the most extensive record ever made of Indian life before it was altered forever by the white man.
