Albrecht Durer's 1515 rhinoceros reproduced by Gessner in his Historiae animalium

[1551]

Woodblock prints

"The rhinoceros is taken directly from Albrecht Dürer's 1515 woodcut. Because Dürer never saw a rhino either, Gessner's copy reproduces all the original errors, such as a little horn protruding from its shoulder, armor plates, sleeves, pantaloons, scaly feet, and saw-like serrations on its tail." - Richard Ellis, research associate in the Division of Paleontology at AMNH, Natural Histories
