Art - Color

These items are paintings, illustrations and color studies of botanical specimens. They were created during field expeditions by museum artists while they directly observed the natural environments selected for inclusion in habitat dioramas. They were used later at the Museum of Natural History by the same or different artists to ensure accuracy in the creation of diorama accessories. In most cases, botanical samples collected at the same time relate to these items and complement them in providing related visual data such as size and texture. Different artists recorded visual data in different and often evolving styles to communicate color, outline and texture of specific plants and flowers.
